When we were approaching our first event with our baby, he was 9 months old. It was the Battle of Libu\u0161\u00edn, which my husband and I always attend in the costume from the second half of the 15th century. I wanted to have the baby clothes as historically acurate as possible, which, given the availability of information about children's clothing in the 15th century, is not so simple. Of course, I was based primarily on illuminations, because what my eye can't see, my head doesn't believe.<\/p>\n

Since it is usually cold at Libu\u0161\u00edn and it traditionally rains there, I had to choose something really warm due to the lack of thermoregulation of the baby. Fortunately, the fabrics for these mini costumes are and will always be enough in the current state of constant sewing of historical costumes. The warmest thing we had at home is a tough, gray-brown wool, 800g. The rest of what we had from it at home was just about enough for a little costume. So the first thing that was made was a practical little dress for a baby boy who was just crawling and walking around the furniture at the time.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Proto\u017ee n\u00e1s za necel\u00fd m\u011bs\u00edc \u010dekaly tradi\u010dn\u00ed Vald\u0161tejnsk\u00e9 slavnosti ve Fr\u00fddlantu, kter\u00fdch jsme se tak\u00e9 pl\u00e1novali z\u00fa\u010dastnit, napadla m\u011b samoz\u0159ejm\u011b my\u0161lenka, zda by nebylo mo\u017en\u00e9 n\u011bjak skloubit kost\u00fdm 15. a 17. stolet\u00ed, abych stihla v\u010das vyrobit prvn\u00ed d\u011btskou historickou v\u00fdbavu. A\u010dkoliv je v na\u0161em historick\u00e9m uskupen\u00ed u d\u011bt\u00ed dost tolerovan\u00e9 n\u011bjak\u00e9 to ne-historick\u00e9 oble\u010den\u00ed, nem\u00e1m to r\u00e1da a br\u00e1nila jsem se tomu. Nicm\u00e9n\u011b, zjistila jsem, \u017ee n\u011bkter\u00e9 prvky d\u011btsk\u00e9ho oble\u010den\u00ed skute\u010dn\u011b byly \u201ev m\u00f3d\u011b\u201c od konce 15. stolet\u00ed do poloviny 17. stolet\u00ed. A tak jsem ud\u011blala nakonec historicky docela v\u011brn\u00fd kompromis, v\u011bdoma toho, \u017ee za chv\u00edli d\u00edt\u011b z m\u00e9ho kompromisu stejn\u011b vyroste a budu \u0161\u00edt znova. Pod\u00edvala jsem se na v\u00fdvoj d\u011btsk\u00e9ho oble\u010den\u00ed od konce 15. stolet\u00ed do poloviny 17. \u2013 snahou bylo samoz\u0159ejm\u011b zachovat co nejv\u00edce autenti\u010dnosti, ale na pam\u011bti jsem tak\u00e9 m\u011bla bezpe\u010d\u00ed miminka, kter\u00e9 v\u0161e cuml\u00e1 a okusuje, tak\u017ee nep\u0159ipadala v \u00favahu m\u011bkk\u00e1 vlna, kterou by miminko mohlo \u017eu\u017elat a ukousnout a zadusit se, \u010di vln\u011bn\u00e9 knofl\u00ed\u010dky, kter\u00e9 by tak\u00e9 mohlo ukousnout apod. Nakonec vznikl n\u00e1\u0161 prvn\u00ed celkem bezpe\u010dn\u00fd d\u011btsk\u00fd outfit jak na 15., tak na 17. stolet\u00ed s n\u011bkter\u00fdmi kombinovateln\u00fdmi prvky z rozvahy starostliv\u00e9 matky a nad\u0161enkyn\u011b v\u0161eho, co je maxim\u00e1ln\u011b historicky v\u011brn\u00e9.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Because any sewing of historical costume in our home is preceded by several months of studying the subject, I ordered the book The Tudor Child for this occasion, which is devoted to the period we need exactly - 1485 to 1625. This book opened new horizons for me. The text depicting the basic clothing for the newborn up to adolescent contains a complete wardrobe with all accessories that have been carefully reconstructed and described in the publication. The bonuses are charts showing the historical extent to which the thing was worn, in what social status and how many documented depictions we have of the given element. Of course there are also patterns on the measuring net in inches.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

I created a pattern for the coat according to the pattern for an 8-month baby, which I enlarged slightly so our child could wear it longer and I would not have to sew a new one after a few months. At the moment he is 15 months old and his coat (and a petticoat) is just right now. I cut out the pattern of the coat on my improvisation pad, which I drew while I was sewing a \"pregnancy doublet\". I originally intended the coat to be fully buttoned up along its entire length, which seemed the most practical. During these tryings, I began to wonder a little bit about whether it was a clever idea to make it with fully opened fastening. I decided to make fastening on hooks, because the firmly stitched and hidden hooks seemed to me as a safer idea than tying the cords or buttoning - they would be easier to jug and bite off - but the coat would probably open with the hooks and the child would constantly chew on brass hooks. <\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In the end I sewed the coat from the bottom up to the middle of the chest. This gave me a sufficiently large hole for the putting over the head, with which the baby does not get so furious. <\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Hooks are tightly sewn at the neckline of the coat, they can hardly be unraveled, and bitten off (I make them from brass). I did not even try putting the baby into the petticoat, after the experience with the coat I made the same size petticoat from blue wool, I lined the bodice with a white linen and chose hooks again as fastening. The question of camping with the child as such remained to be solved. What to do with him during the day? Let him crawl in the mud?
